An Italian Greyhound’s daily routine: the short answer
An Italian Greyhound needs regular walks, safe running in an enclosed area, play and plenty of warm rest. Leash walks a few times a day are the usual advice, and the breed is active and needs regular exercise. The sources we checked give no exact number of minutes: go by the dog.
What to include in the day:
- 2–3 leash walks: morning, midday and evening;
- safe running in an enclosed area if you can;
- short games at home;
- attention and obedience sessions (a few minutes each);
- lots of warm rest;
- regular feeding and toileting.
The morning
A typical morning:
- A toilet outing and a short walk.
- Breakfast on schedule (our article on feeding).
- A game or activity for a few minutes.
- Rest on a warm bed.
If you are in a hurry, the essentials are walking and feeding the dog. A game can be short: an Italian Greyhound values your attention.
The day
- If you are home, take a break: some air, a game.
- If you are at work, think of a helper: it finds being alone hard. More in our article on being home alone.
- The sleeping place should be warm and quiet (our article on where it sleeps).
The evening
The evening is usually calm:
- A walk: calm, not too long.
- Supper.
- A game or a cuddle.
- A blanket, the sofa, warmth. It loves to be near you.
- A last toilet outing before bed.
After a wet walk wipe the paws, take off wet clothing and give it a warm place.
Walks
Leash walks are advised a few times a day. Good ones include:
- ordinary sniffing walks: that is an activity too;
- safe running in an enclosed area (off lead only in a fenced area: an Italian Greyhound will chase any movement);
- short walks in cold and damp, with clothing.

Games at home
An Italian Greyhound likes to play and stays playful into adulthood. Safe games:
- a soft toy it can carry and toss;
- gentle tug with a soft toy, without jerking;
- “find the toy” or a treat in the room;
- simple commands for a treat: “sit”, “come”, “place”.
Safety rules:
- play on a carpet or non-slip floor;
- do not throw a toy high: jumping and landing are dangerous for slender legs;
- do not allow jumps off the sofa;
- avoid sustained exertion: do not overload puppies (long runs, jumping).

Activities and sport
Italian Greyhounds do well in agility, Rally, Obedience and Fast CAT. If you are interested:
- find classes that use gentle methods;
- consider the dog’s age and health;
- start with an introduction and do not overload at once;
- do not run on slippery ground.
Training is built on rewards: more in our article on training.
Activities in rain and cold
If the weather is bad but you must go out:
- dress the dog (our article on whether Italian Greyhounds get cold);
- shorten the walk;
- make up for it with play and activities at home.
A rainy day can be cosy for an Italian Greyhound: a blanket, a soft toy, a treat.
A puppy’s routine
A puppy’s routine is different: it sleeps a lot, eats more often and toilets every 2–4 hours. Short games are better than one long one. More in our article on a puppy at home.
Weight and activity
It is easy to overfeed an Italian Greyhound. Regular walks and play help keep the weight in check. Watch the shape: ribs palpable, waist visible. More in our article on feeding.
