Turn the garment inside out
Run a hand along seams at chest, under the legs and around the neck. A stiff edge, loose thread or thick join can bother a dog even when the outside looks neat. Notice where each seam sits as the dog moves.
Observe after wear
Keep first outings short and inspect contact points after removing the item. If the dog scratches one area repeatedly or fabric rubs, stop using it until the fit is assessed. Do not hide discomfort under a thicker base layer.

Inspect the inside in daylight. Run your fingertips along armholes, collar and lower edge. A knot, coarse thread end or stiff label may be invisible outside while sitting at a constant contact point.
A seam does not have to be completely flat to feel comfortable: fabric, finish and location matter. Compare thickness where several panels meet. A bulky junction feels different beneath a harness strap.
After a brief fitting, examine skin and coat at contact areas. Redness is not a compulsory adjustment stage. Remove the garment and investigate the cause; seek veterinary advice if irritation persists.
Before removing a label, save fabric and care information. Avoid cutting close to a seam where you could damage the stitching. Ask the seller about an appropriate method first. An inside inspection is a simple way to notice construction details that catalogue photographs rarely show.
