Caring for Italian Greyhound clothing: the short answer
The main rule of care is to look at the label of the finished garment. Different fabrics and parts need different care, so there is no single washing setting. We give no specific temperatures or programmes here: they depend on the garment’s composition, and in our catalogue compositions are still being confirmed (see the product card and the label).
The essentials:
- Read the label: washing, drying, ironing, cleaning.
- Take wet clothing off the dog and dry it fully, especially the collar and cuffs.
- Between washes, dust and hair can simply be removed with a suitable brush.
- Store only clean, dry garments.
- Do not put damp clothing back on the dog.
How to read the label
Care symbols are standardised (ISO 3758): they show how to wash, dry, iron and clean. If a symbol is unclear, find the explanation in an international care-symbol guide or ask the seller before washing. Permission to machine-wash does not mean permission to tumble-dry: look at each symbol separately.
If there is no label or it has worn away, ask the seller for care recommendations.
Refreshing between washes
Not every garment needs a full wash. If it is just dusty or has some hair on it:
- let it dry and remove dust and hair with a suitable soft brush if the material allows;
- do not rub wet dirt into the fabric: let it dry and then clean it;
- treat a local stain only with a suitable product after testing it on an inconspicuous spot;
- do not mask smells or urine with fragrances.
Take the garment off the dog before any treatment, and do not apply a cleaning product to clothing while it is worn.
Washing
- Follow the label: programme, temperature, detergent.
- Before washing, check fastenings and hook-and-loop strips: debris stops them working, and an open strip snags neighbouring items. Prepare fastenings as the manufacturer recommends.
- Use a laundry bag if one is indicated or suitable.
- Do not add extra detergent: it will not fix a wrong programme.
- Rinse well: detergent residue irritates the skin.
If a stain remains, do not rub harder or reach for a random solvent: you can spoil the fabric. Ask the manufacturer.
Drying
After an allowed wash, smooth out the sleeves, collar and lower part. Dry in the way the label states. The surface may seem dry while moisture is still left in a thick seam or cuff. Do not dry on a hot radiator and do not iron if that is not allowed.
Do not put a damp garment back on the dog: damp fabric chills, and an Italian Greyhound feels the cold. That is why a second garment helps: one drying, one on the dog. More in our clothing guide.
After a walk
Take off wet clothing and hang or spread it out to dry. Especially dry the collar and cuffs: they take longest. Do not throw a wet garment into a closed basket or bag: it will not dry. More about damp walks in our article on spring and autumn.
Storing for the season
Storing well means being easy to get out when needed.
- Check the garment: are the seams intact and does the fastening work? Set aside anything that needs mending.
- Wash and dry fully, including the collar and cuffs.
- Fold loosely, smoothing the sleeves without twisting.
- Keep in a clean, dry place away from leaks and strong heat, not in an airtight bag with moisture in it.
- Label “clean” and “needs repair”: easy to find in autumn.
- You can keep the label or a photo of it nearby.
Get the garment out before the first cold morning and try it on: over a season a puppy may have grown, and an adult dog’s measurements may have changed. Last year’s size letter does not decide the size today. More in our measuring guide.
Care of harness and lead
The same principles apply: follow the manufacturer’s recommendations, dry fully and check the straps and fastenings for wear. A worn strap or damaged fastening is unsafe. More in our article on harnesses and leads.
