Comfort starts at the base
A long fine neck makes a high collar visually striking, but appearance is not enough. Fabric should sit softly without pressing at the base or twisting beneath equipment. After fitting, let the dog look around and sniff the floor.
Check it while moving
If the neck rises toward the ears, forms a stiff fold or prompts the dog to remove it, reconsider the cut. With a rain shell, check both garments together: comfortable pieces can become tight in combination.
Try three head positions
Look at the neck while the dog stands normally, turns towards you and lowers their nose. If fabric is loose in one position but pulls from chest to the back of the head in another, a finger check at the edge is insufficient.
Check dressing separately: can the head pass through without excessive stretching or pressure on the ears? A narrow entrance can be awkward even when the finished neck circumference is suitable.
With layers, smooth the inner collar before adding the outer piece. Recheck after walking for bunched fabric. Two folded textiles change the fit.
Before buying, ask whether measurements describe the body or finished collar, how much it stretches and whether there is an opening. “Fits every Italian Greyhound” cannot replace these details. Repeat the fitting after washing because ribbing can change shape.
