Movement can become an event
An Italian Greyhound is a sighthound. It may notice movement before you do. Not every head turn predicts a dash, but a new route deserves attention to the surroundings. Hold the lead securely and watch the distance to traffic.
Do not punish curiosity
A bird on the lawn is a normal part of the dog’s world. Pause at a safe distance, let your dog look, then invite them onward. If excitement rises, add distance and choose a quieter path. The aim is a manageable walk, not a dog that never notices anything.
Check the route
In a new place, notice gates, bicycles, animals and road crossings. This takes less time than recovering from a sudden lunge. A securely enclosed area offers more room for exploration.
Make an exercise easier to understand
If a distant scooter distracts your dog, try moving farther from the path. Training beside a stream of people is harder than using a quiet corner of the same park. Start with a familiar task and reward a brief return of attention to you. There is no need to hold the dog’s head in place.
At home, reduce distracting movement: a television, another pet playing or someone carrying food. Begin in a simple setting before increasing difficulty. This makes it easier to see whether the dog understands your request rather than happens to look in the expected direction.
Breed tendencies do not explain every unusual behaviour. If a dog suddenly bumps into objects, becomes hesitant in familiar surroundings or repeatedly squints, discuss the change with a vet. An internet video cannot assess an individual Italian Greyhound’s vision. Notice changes from that dog’s usual behaviour instead of comparing them with dramatic breed descriptions.
