Choose a rule everyone can follow
If the dog may use the sofa, give them a comfortable spot and consider a safe way down. If not, offer a soft bed nearby. Consistency matters more than strictness; a rule that changes from person to person is hard to understand.
Notice the height
A high jump onto a slick floor is an awkward option for a small dog. Suitable steps or lower furniture may help if the dog actually uses them. Do not simply place a stair and assume the problem is solved; watch the usual route first.
Observe one ordinary day
Notice how often the dog climbs onto the sofa and how it comes down: an immediate jump, a search for a lower side, or a wait for help. This tells you more than a generic online rule. If you add a step, introduce it calmly and make sure the dog actually uses it. Remove slippery footing at the landing point. Sudden hesitation or pain in movement needs veterinary advice.
Steps need a stable landing
Position steps so they cannot shift or end against the soft edge of a cushion. The dog needs room to stand securely at the top and a non-slip approach below. Check the structure by hand before introducing it.
Show the route without rushing. Reward interest in the lowest step, then pause. Do not push from behind or pull on a collar. If the arrangement is clearly awkward, try a different height or discuss a suitable option with a professional.
The family’s habits matter too: avoid suddenly calling a dog across the room while they are resting on furniture. If unsupervised access is unsafe, provide a comfortable floor-level bed and limit access. Owning steps does not guarantee the dog will choose them every time. The surrounding routine has to make that route easy and predictable.
