Watch how your dog rests
Some dogs curl tightly; others stretch to full length. Note their normal sleeping position rather than only their height. The bed should leave room to change position. For a dog that likes burrowing, a separate soft blanket can be more useful than an elaborate high-sided bed.
Think about daily cleaning
A removable, washable cover saves time after wet walks. Check seams, zips and the floor where the bed will stand; it should not slide away. Begin with one simple option and let the dog’s habits guide any additions.
A home test before buying
Fold an old blanket into the rough shape of the bed you are considering and place it where the bed would go. Watch whether the dog curls there, stretches out or moves to cooler flooring. This simple test will not select a perfect product, but it reveals size and placement preferences. When buying, check whether the cover can be washed separately and whether the bottom stays put on your floor.
Try the footprint before buying
Lay a towel on the floor roughly matching the internal sleeping area. External dimensions include bolsters and can look generous while leaving little room inside. Compare that area with the dog’s actual sleeping positions, both curled up and stretched out.
Check whether the cover comes off, fits your washing machine and can dry separately from the filling. If each wash leaves the dog without a bed for two days, an attractive fabric may be impractical.
Assess more than surface softness. A thin base can compress onto the floor; a tall unstable bolster may collapse as the dog steps in. For a dog with difficulty moving, discuss entrance height and support with a vet. A generic orthopaedic label is not enough to choose the right bed. Practical access, room and care instructions deserve equal attention.
