The first five minutes
Ask guests to enter calmly and not reach toward the dog. Give the dog a spot where nobody approaches uninvited. If the Italian Greyhound shows interest, introductions can unfold gradually. If it retreats under a blanket, respect that choice.
Give one clear rule
People can remember a simple rule: do not pick the dog up, do not feed from the table, ask the owner first. Choose what matters in your home and say it before the visit. A good visit ends with a relaxed dog, not necessarily with everyone getting a photograph.
A note to visitors
Before the visit, send just two sentences: “Our dog may approach you on her own. Please do not pick her up or feed her without asking.” That avoids an awkward moment at the door after someone has already leaned over the dog. With many guests, provide a separate quiet spot and explain that it is off limits. A greeting need not happen in the first five minutes, or even that evening.
Give visitors three rules in advance
Ask visitors to come in and settle without leaning over the dog. Let the dog decide whether to approach. Avoid passing them from person to person or offering unapproved food. These rules are easier to explain before the doorbell rings.
Prepare a quiet retreat where nobody follows the dog. Avoid placing the water bowl and favourite bed beside the route to the dining table. If several people arrive, put one adult in charge of the door; an open hallway quickly becomes an escape opportunity.
A successful visit need not end in a group selfie. The dog may spend most of the evening at a comfortable distance. If they hide, freeze or try to leave, create more space. Asking a guest to persist so the dog gets used to contact faster can make the encounter harder. Let relaxed choice set the pace.
