Start with a natural stance
Use a flexible measuring tape and a flat, non-slip floor. Let your dog stand naturally on all four feet; sitting changes both the back line and the chest shape. It can help to have one person keep the dog comfortable while the other measures. Keep the tape flat without pulling it tight. Record body measurements first, rather than adding a generous allowance everywhere: the garment determines how much ease it needs.
Back, chest and neck
Measure the back from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, following the spine. Measure the chest around the widest part of the ribcage, usually behind the front legs. Measure the neck at its base, where a collar begins. Take each measurement twice. If they differ noticeably, check the stance and tape position instead of simply averaging the numbers.
Compare with the chart
Our sample chart gives body measurements, not finished garment dimensions. Begin with the chest, then check the back and neck. All three should fit the appropriate ranges. If the chest suggests S and the back suggests L, one letter alone cannot guarantee a fit. That combination needs a fit check or a different cut. Measure a growing puppy again before each purchase.
Finish with a movement check
After trying the garment on, let your dog walk, sit and stretch. Check for pulling under the front legs, slipping at the shoulders and changes to their normal stride. Look at the belly opening and sleeve length too. A side photograph is more useful than a view from above for spotting tension and seam placement.
