Look at the room
Room temperature, draughts, bed position and the dog’s age matter more than a fashion rule. A dog resting comfortably without clothing may not need another layer. If using light indoor wear, check warmth and whether seams interfere with resting or movement.
Clothing does not replace a comfortable room
A blanket, non-slip floor and sheltered resting place each serve a purpose. Do not leave a new garment on the dog unsupervised until you know it is worn comfortably. Persistent unusual shivering or lethargy needs veterinary advice.
Check the resting place first
If the dog is uncomfortable in a draught, move the bed first. If they lie against a hot radiator, offer another resting place. Clothing need not compensate for every unsuitable corner of the home.
Indoors, notice how a garment behaves during rest: does a fastening press, a sleeve twist or stretching become difficult? Elaborate decoration and long loose parts add little to sleeping comfort.
Supervise a new piece until fit and response are understood. If the dog chews it, remove it and investigate. Soft fabric does not automatically make every design suitable for continuous wear.
Compare behaviour with and without the layer in a comfortable setting. If the dog rests happily without it, the garment may be unnecessary. Discuss unusual cold sensitivity or changes in wellbeing with a vet. The decision should follow the individual dog’s needs rather than a rule that Italian Greyhounds must always be dressed.
