Define the job
A light cover for a quick city outing and technical clothing for prolonged rain are different products. A smooth-looking fabric alone does not establish waterproof performance. Fit without pulling
Check back length, chest room and the position of the front edge. Lowering the head should not drag the whole coat forward. The hem should not interfere with the legs. If you plan an underlayer, fit the coat over that layer: a size that works on a bare body may be tight over a bulky sweater.
Everyday details
Try the fastening and check whether it catches fur. Consider how the leash and your existing walking equipment work with the coat. Avoid cutting your own openings without understanding the construction; this can damage the fabric and create uncomfortable edges. Look for the maker’s intended arrangement first.
After the rain
Remove the wet outer layer, clean it as directed and open it out to dry. Do not leave it crumpled in a closed bag. Check lining and cuffs, which may stay damp longer than the outside. Follow the specific coating-care instructions rather than advice written for a different coat.
